Gmail Integration Guide

Connect your AI agent to Gmail for sending, reading, and searching email. Uses Google App Passwords for secure SMTP and IMAP access without sharing your main password.

What your agent can do

Full email capabilities through Gmail's SMTP and IMAP protocols.

Send emails

Compose and send emails from your Gmail address. Your agent can follow up with leads, send reports, and handle routine correspondence.

Read inbox

Monitor incoming messages and process them automatically. Your agent can triage support requests, flag urgent emails, and extract key data.

Search messages

Find specific emails by sender, subject, date, or content. Your agent can pull up past conversations and reference previous threads.

Draft management

Create, edit, and manage email drafts. Your agent can prepare responses for your review before sending.

Prerequisites

What you need before connecting Gmail to your agent.

  • A Google account with the Gmail address you want your agent to use
  • 2-Step Verification enabled on the Google account
  • An App Password generated from Google security settings
  • A ClawTrust agent on any plan (Starter, Pro, or Enterprise)

Step-by-step setup

Connect Gmail to your agent in about 5 minutes.

1

Enable 2-Step Verification on your Google account

Go to myaccount.google.com > Security > 2-Step Verification and turn it on. App Passwords are only available when 2FA is enabled.

2

Generate an App Password

Go to myaccount.google.com > Security > App Passwords. Select "Mail" as the app and your device type. Google will generate a 16-character password. Copy it immediately, as you cannot view it again.

3

Add the Send credential in ClawTrust

In your agent's dashboard, go to Credentials > Add Credential. Select "Email Login (Send)" as the type. Enter your Gmail address as the username, the App Password as the password, and smtp.gmail.com as the SMTP server.

4

Add the Read credential in ClawTrust

Add a second credential with type "Email Inbox (Read)". Enter the same Gmail address and App Password. Use imap.gmail.com as the IMAP server. Port 993 with SSL is the default.

5

Test the connection

Use the "Test" button on each credential card. ClawTrust will verify SMTP connectivity for Send and IMAP login for Read. If both pass, your agent is ready to handle email.

Credential details

Reference for the credential configuration fields.

Credential type (Send)Email Login (Send)

Security note

Your App Password is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before storage. Your agent never sees the raw credential. The ClawTrust proxy injects it at request time and restricts all outbound requests to smtp.gmail.com and imap.gmail.com only. You can revoke the App Password from Google at any time to instantly cut off access.
